Nappy Size Guide Australia: When to Size Up

Getting the size wrong is the single most expensive mistake in bulk nappy buying — not because the nappy is wrong, but because you're left holding a box you can't use.

Every Australian nappy brand sizes by weight, not age, which sounds simple until you notice how much the ranges overlap between brands and even between sizes of the same brand. That overlap is exactly where bulk-buying goes wrong.

Typical Australian size ranges

SizeTypical weight rangeRough age (varies a lot)
1 — NewbornUp to 5kg0–1 month
2 — Infant4–8kg1–5 months
3 — Crawler6–11kg5–9 months
4 — Toddler9–14kg9–18 months
5 — Walker12–18kg18+ months

Note the overlaps: a 9kg baby fits comfortably in either Size 3 or Size 4 depending on brand and build. This isn't inconsistency between brands so much as an inherent feature of sizing by weight — babies vary in shape as well as weight, and manufacturers build in overlap on purpose so a growth spurt doesn't mean an overnight leak problem.

The overlap is also the stockpile trap

Most parents move up a size slightly earlier than the chart suggests, once fit starts loosening at the leg or waist — not exactly when they cross the kilogram threshold. That's fine in isolation, but it means the "current size" window is often shorter than the weight range implies, especially through Sizes 2–4 where babies grow fastest.

The actual risk: buying 3 months of Size 3 in one go, only to size up after 6 weeks because of a growth spurt. The nappies aren't wasted — you can usually use them up eventually or pass them on — but the cash you spent is locked up in a box you can't use right now, right when you need to buy the next size too.
